If you remember, land prices are ridiculously cheap in border colonies. To use the US housing market comparison, there are parts of the US where you could build a relatively spectacular palace for $200,000. And there are parts of the US where $200,000 wouldn't even pay for your driveway.
Land prices in the colonies are probably a closer match to, say, land prices near Death Valley than land prices in Los Angeles, New York City, or Houston.
More generally, the value of money, goods, services all tend to vary based on the location, not just the era. Land on a border colony is in high supply but low demand. This is probably not true in Unity City, Terra, or any of the core worlds. Conversely, gear like laser sights is probably quite cheap in the core worlds, because of the wide availability of advanced factories, but in Karron, such equipment was prohibitively expensive and in short supply.
A good dinner of high quality steak might cost a few credits on a colony centered around farming and ranching, but the same dinner in a high-rent district of Terra would probably be tens of times as expensive.
