Background: Hyponatremia is the most common electrolyte disorder. Thiazides, antidepressants, antipsychotic drugs, and antiepileptic drugs are well-known causes of hyponatremia.
This review in AJKD lists most of the causes of drug-induced hyponatremia and provides the rationale for why hyponatremia occurs in the setting of these drugs.
The causes, clinical manifestations, and evaluation of hyponatremia, as well as detailed discussions about specific causes of hyponatremia, are presented in other topics: (See Causes of hypotonic hyponatremia in adults .) (See Manifestations of hyponatremia and hypernatremia in adults .)

Diuretics such as furosemide may cause hypovolemic hyponatremia. Other medications that cause hyponatremia include theophylline, carbamazepine, chlorpromazine, indapamide, amiodarone, and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Most of these cause SIADH (euvolemic hyponatremia). Morphine and barbiturates can also cause hyponatremia.
However, many drugs were not included in the investigators' list of medications that cause hyponatremia. Nicotine patch therapy can induce hyponatremia. The
