The chemical name is assigned upon discovery of the drug. It is a scientific name that describes the chemical structure of the drug and is typically complex. Once approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the drug is assigned a generic (nonproprietary) name and a brand (proprietary) name (Merck & Co., 2023).
