“Angela Uzielli bursary has helped me enormously while studying double sport and biology at sixth form”.

Sixth former Amy Staveley, from Ganton Golf Club in Yorkshire, was awarded an Angela Uzielli bursary, from the England Golf Trust. This is given to promising girl golfers who wish to further their academic education while continuing to develop their golfing skills.

Amy says it has been a huge help and has had a positive effect on the golfing opportunities available to her. It means she can now participate in national competitions and buy new clubs.

“These new, fitted clubs have helped me perform better in competitions, including winning the England Golf Girls’ Champion of Champions at Woodhall Spa, in September 2023 and competing in the R&A Girls’ Amateur Championship.”

Amy started playing golf when she was just four when her mum and dad took her to the local golf centre. Since then, she has achieved a high standard, thanks, she says, to “the support of so many good people around me including the ladies at Ganton Golf Club and Yorkshire Ladies County Golf Association.”

The bursary also means Amy can concentrate fully on her golf, fitting it around college and usually spending 25-35 hours a week practising. As a member of the England Golf Regional squad (Yorkshire) and the Yorkshire first team, she regularly competes in the elite golf competitions at junior and adult level.

“I love playing golf and have met many new friends. I am a committed golfer always working hard to achieve my goals. Even though golf can be frustrating, I love the challenges and experiences golf has provided me with.  Practising at Ganton on a warm summer evening is my favourite things to do.

“I am striving to play for the England National Team and my dream is to win a major England Amateur Ladies competition and to play College golf at the highest level. Ultimately, my dream would be to turn pro and play for Europe in the Solheim Cup!”

Angela Uzielli was one of the natural charmers of the golfing world and her unexpected death in 1999 shocked the sport. She had been British Champion in 1977 and played in the Curtis Cup the following year. She was English Champion in 1990 – when she also captained the England team – and British Senior Champion three times from 1990.

Hugh and Catherine Stevenson, friends of the Uzielli family, have very kindly provided the founding capital for Bursaries to be known as ‘The Angela Uzielli Bursaries’ in her memory.
