Golf is my escape from everyday life
Renn White from Cosby Golf Club was awarded the Angela Uzielli Bursary from the Trust whilst studying a BA in Journalism at the University of Lincoln.

“Playing golf helps me to calm my nervous system,” said Renn. “I have diagnoses of ADHD and anxiety, so golf is my escape from the worries of everyday life. It’s my safe place.”
The cost-of-living crisis means it can be challenging for Renn to pay for university accommodation and food – as well as all the costs involved in playing golf. The bursary helped with this expense and allowed Renn to continue playing the sport she loves.
“I have used my award to pay for my university accommodation in times of financial distress,” added Renn, who started playing golf at the age of nine. “I have also used it to feed myself, and to pay for part of my golf membership.
“My grandad had recently retired and become a member at Cosby Golf Club, Leicestershire, and I was interested in seeing what he did. He invited us to a family fun day there, and I was hooked.”
Now, Renn says golf is a crucial part of life. “Golf has played an integral part in my mental health recovery, and the community of golf helped me play every weekend,” admitted Renn. “Without this I could have been a completely different person now.”
Renn plays around twice a week, mostly with her grandad and father and sometimes supports the junior section of Cosby Golf Club.
“Throughout the years I have dabbled in county and local golf, winning various awards and having the most fun in my junior section,” added Renn.
“I trained with the Leicestershire & Rutland County Girls and played in county competitions, was runner-up in the Alice Watson Trophy in August 2021 after 36 holes of match play, losing only on the 18th green. In the same year I won the Lady Captain’s Trophy at my club.
“I am still part of the organising team at my golf club, helping to bring young golfers into the sport and developing the skills of the younger generations.
“In future, I plan to enter as many competitions as I can, reduce my handicap and just generally enjoy playing golf as much as I can. I plan on finishing my course and entering the workforce as a journalist.”
