Grant is helping Poppi to achieve her goals
Sixth former Poppi Maxwell from Hessle Golf Club is aiming for a golf scholarship in the USA – and a recent grant from the England Golf Trust is helping her achieve this goal.
The award has supercharged her performance. Since receiving this her handicap has come down to index 3.8 and she is now Junior Captain at Hessle Golf Club. She has also captained her regional team Yorkshire against Lancashire.
‘Thank you, England Golf Trust – my performance and competitive results have really improved since the award,’ said Poppi. ‘This will hopefully help take me to the US next year on a scholarship.’
‘I used the money for elite coaching, and it’s had a positive effect. I have also completely adapted my swing to enhance my game, and the regular lessons have helped improve my putting.’
Poppi discovered golf at the age of five, joining in at her dad’s golf club. She has stayed at the club since then, progressing through to the regional and then the national squad. She trains every day and plays weekly with girls from the regional squad or with family members.
‘Playing golf means everything to me. it is the environment I grew up in and has had such a huge impact on my life – teaching me skills for the future. It’s also a part of my educational life. My teachers support me and take me to represent my school in the national school’s competitions.’
‘As I progress from a junior to an adult golfer, I am incredibly focused on getting my handicap down to scratch. I am also aiming for a high performing season and looking to gain a scholarship in America. Ultimately, my dream is to play in the Solheim cup!’
Mum Alison Maxwell said this was an important time in Poppi’s golfing career and the help was appreciated. ‘It’s been great having some assistance for the Trust because this is a pivotal year for Poppi. The award, together with the England Golf training that she has received and has truly embraced, is really helping.’
