Michael Varney from Sharpley Springs Golf Club chooses the Trust as his Captain’s Charity.
Sharpley Springs Golf Club, in County Durham, is small – with just 186 members and growing. This year its second ever club captain Michael Varney, who is also the general manager, was delighted to choose the England Golf Trust as his annual charity.
The former rigger took up golf around a decade ago after quitting football and wanting another sporting challenge. He now loves the sport. ‘I can safely say I am addicted – I eat, sleep and breathe golf.’
He jumped at the chance to raise funds for the Trust, delighted to help more youngsters develop and thrive in what can be an expensive and elitist game.
‘I’ve always thought of golf as an elitist sport and the initial outlay is expensive. I love that I can help people to get introduced and take up a sport that means so much to me,’ said Michael.
So far, he has raised almost £800 for the Trust, with further fundraising days planned. ‘We had a Texas scramble, a raffle and some on-course competitions. We are only a small club with 186 members and growing – and this is the first year of having a captain so I am hoping this is a tradition that now continues,’ he said.
‘It was fantastic to be given prizes for the day, banners, clothing and the fourball at Woodhall Spa Golf Club was amazing.’
‘Communication with the Trust has been great. I can’t fault them for their support and I’m looking forward to hearing how the youngsters are progressing after they have been given support by the Trust.’
I would highly recommend future captains choose the Trust as their charity.
